The Halal Guys (New Orleans, LA)

Posted on July 10, 2016 by chefsgirlnola@gmail.com

I first heard of Halal Guys in New York and the over an hour wait for their amazing chicken and rice as well as their gyro sandwiches. I didn’t have the pleasure to try the original New York location, but I’ve gotten to try the Houston location and now in NOLA. I’ve gone multiple times since it’s so convenient and on my way home from work.

Fries…because I can’t say “no” to fries…

I definitely enjoyed the short wait time and delicious food here at the NOLA location. The gyro was delicious and the Combo bowl was good, BUT the chicken is consistently dry here. I would go easy on their HOT sauce. It’s deceivingly HOT but very flavorful!

The Halal Guys purists will say that “Nothing beats The Halal Guys in New York City!”, but until I try it, I’m still enjoying the Halal guys here in New Orleans. The location is quite small, but there’s a good amount of seats considering the location downtown. Service is hit or miss, but I’m usually in and out so no biggie.

Stella Maris

Posted on December 24, 2015 by chefsgirlnola@gmail.com

I never thought I’d say this, but Chalmette has some pretty good food options! Stella Maris is a Mediterranean restaurant located within an ethnic grocery store. If you’re ordering to-go, then meet at the counter, but have a seat if you’d like to sit down and enjoy your food there.

Lamb Kebab. Hummus.

Before I talk about the food, I will have to mention that service is a bit lacking. I frequent here regularly so I’ve met every single server and can tell you that they are sweet, but Stella Maris is in the process of training more waitresses and many of them have yet to actually try the food and service may be a bit lacking or slow. Honestly, it’s hit or miss BUT the food is very consistent. My go-to dish is the Gyro Plate (pronounced year-oh, but for some reason they pronounce jai-ro here). It’s delicious! You have the choice of ordering with rice or hummus. I alternate since both options are great! I’ve tried the Lamb Kebab here, but for those who are sensitive to more gamey flavors and meats, then I would avoid it. It’s very fresh though!

Stella Maris is my favorite lunch spot in the Chalmette area, but service needs work. For that reason I’d give it 4/5 spoons. Minus 1 star for service, but 4 star food!
