Los Tacos No. 1 (Meatpacking District, New York, NY)

Posted on July 10, 2015 by chefsgirlnola@gmail.com

I’ve done a little traveling from coast to coast, north to south and have an experienced tongue for tacos. Los Tacos No. 1 is definitely highly ranked in my book. There’s a pretty long line on this Sunday at 2 o’clock. The line extends way past a neighboring booth, but moves super quickly…

Once you’re done with ordering, the cashier hands you a ticket that you had to one of the taco artisans and your tacos are promptly made. We ordered the Adobado (Marinated Pork) on Corn Tortilla. The corn tortillas are made in house and are so fresh! Who would’ve thought that one of the best and freshest tacos could be in NYC? The taco came already topped, but there are sides that you could dress with: pico de gallo, verde, dried chili peppers, lime, etc. The tacos are fairly small so be sure to order an extra taco more than you normally would eat. The meat was so moist and flavorful and I loved the sauce that came with the Adobado. So good…

My one regret is not ordering more…

Maurepas Foods (Bywater, New Orleans, LA)

Posted on September 18, 2014 by chefsgirl

Late night dining is always so hard to find, especially on a weekday. Maurepas Foods is open 11 AM to 12 AM so it was a perfect place to catch dinner with “The Chef” right after work. The feel is very hip and it’s located in the Bywater area, which is booming with new restaurants!

First off, I loved the chili butter! Butter with chili oil..two sinful goodies all in one, then spread over bread. Mmm! The chicken leg quarter was very homey and moist. If you like goat and are into gamey flavors, then the tacos are for you! Goat meat is definitely an acquired taste, but is definitely worth a shot if it’s your first time because it’s the perfect transition via taco. I will have to say the food menu is limited, but the quality and value is there!

Torchy’s Tacos (Houston, TX)

Posted on June 18, 2012 by chefsgirl

I travel a lot between New Orleans and Houston so I thought I’d spice this blog up a little with some Mexican food!

Torchy’s Tacos was originally an Austin taco joint, which expanded and finally reached Houston. Austin is known for it’s laid back atmosphere and character and you can definitely see that in Torchy’s menu and atmosphere…

I ordered To Go so it’s not plated up as nice as when you’re dining in, but I tried!

Chicken Fajita. Tender marinated & grilled chicken breast. Grilled onions and peppers, cheese and pico. Flour tortilla.

Taco of the Month: Tuk Tuk. Marinated and grilled Thai beef fajitas. Cooked cabbage slaw. Pickled cucumbers and carrots. Sriracha. Avocado sauce. Jack Cheese. Lime. Crushed peanuts and mint. Corn Tortilla.

The next taco I’d love to try is “The Independent”…it has hand-battered deep fried portobello mushroom strips and more…but it had me at portobello…

Whether you’re dining in or ordering take out, Torchy’s is a great place when you’re craving some delicious tacos. The service is always friendly and helpful and food service is quick. The tacos vary from authentic Mexican versions to creative concoctions that are just as delicious. I know Houston has tons of taco joints, but Torchy’s will definitely satiate that taco craving!
