Whataburger #503 (Braeswood, Houston, TX)

Posted on June 26, 2016 by chefsgirlnola@gmail.com

I am a breakfast fast food junkie. I typically don’t eat any fast food unless it’s breakfast (or if it’s Taco Bell but that’s another story). All of my Texas friends RAVE about this wonderful BOBs (Breakfast On a Bun) at Whataburger. Whether it strikes a childhood memory or is an overhyped breakfast craze, I just had to try again for myself…

I ordered one BOB and one Jalapeño Cheddar Biscuit. I was pleasantly surprised! Years ago, I tried a BOB but wasn’t impressed, but I really enjoyed it this time! It was great for breakfast and since I was caddying my husband on the golf course, it was a tasty snack mid-round snack. Next time my crazy Texas friends rave about the Whataburger BOBs, I might have to join in! I loved it and wish Whataburger could come to NOLA! Besides the breakfast, I really love their burgers as well.

We visited the Braeswood location since it was convenient, but I’ve found other locations to be just as consistent…there’s also hundreds of them in Houston and the surrounding areas!

Joe’s Cafe (Causeway, Metairie, LA)

Posted on September 22, 2015 by chefsgirlnola@gmail.com

After a late night my friends and I were STARVING. We stopped by Joe’s Cafe in Metairie for some food. I’m always pretty skeptical about late night food and how much love and care is put into it (especially at 3:30AM on a weekend). I was SO surprised. The presentation was good and the food was delicious! I really loved the Fried Pork Chop and I couldn’t get over the butteriness and crispiness of that biscuit. Next time you’re searching for late night bites, try Joe’s Cafe. The cashier and girl working the kitchen that night were super friendly!

Cosi (Dupont Circle, Washington D.C.)

Cosi Club Squagel Breakfast Sandwich . Eggs. Ham. Tomato. Bacon.  Cosi Squagel. Jalapeno Cheddar Squagel.

A local friend told me that Cosi had an awesome breakfast item…the Squagel. A square bagel. I didn’t think much of it when I heard about it, but when my fiance brought one back to the hotel one morning, I couldn’t help but want my own. The bagel or “squagel” is the perfect thickness for a breakfast sandwich. It’s not too thick and easy to bite into. He ordered the Jalapeno Cheese bagel and it was perfect. Be careful, because I bit into the bagel at a wrong angle and for a whole half hour, my upper lip was burning from the jalapeno spice. Besides that, it’s delicious!

Some reviews mention this restaurant having poor service, however, my fiance and I noticed they were friendly on both occasions.

I didn’t have a chance to try the rest of the menu, but it looked very similar to Panera Bread, with the exception of their delicious bagel/squagels…

Biscuits & Buns on Banks (Mid-City, New Orleans, LA)

Posted on November 14, 2014 by chefsgirl

It’s the weekend and I can’t stress enough how much I love brunch. I can eat brunch any time of day. So I was excited to eat here!

Biscuits & Buns on Banks is a new brunch spot that’s been open for about a year now. There was a bit of a wait, but outside there’s some seating and coffee while you wait. 3 or 4 groups were ahead of us, but we waited no more than 25 minutes. It could be more or less depending on what time of day or how busy they may get…

Abita glazed pot roast and debris. Over grits. I added an egg!

Normally, the chef and I would order a variety of things, but thank goodness we didn’t! The portion sizes are large and trust me, I can eat, but for the first time in a long time, we had to take home to-go boxes. The omelette was great…we stuffed it with our favorite things: spinach, onions, mushrooms, and crabmeat. I love crabmeat…

My favorite dish was without a doubt, the Abita glazed pot roast and debris. Order it over grits and add an egg. So scrumptious. Every bite you can tell was so bad, but oh so good! This was the dish that I had to take home and it made the best leftovers the next morning especially since the grits just marinated in the debris and goodness overnight. The biscuit is delicious as well. I kind of wish they toasted their biscuits a bit, because it was so good when I toasted it at home. Be sure to order the jelly with your biscuits.

It’s too bad we couldn’t order more so I could get a little taste of everything. The next items I’m eyeing are the Grilled Brie on Waffles with blueberry compote. That’s a combination I can’t turn down! Another would be the BBB Seafood Etouffee over house biscuit/grits.

You can tell the owner is very involved and very friendly. Keep it up! The menu is great with a variety of delicious brunch options. I can’t wait to come back for another filling meal!

Common Bond Cafe & Bakery (Montrose, Houston, TX)

Posted on September 5, 2014 by chefsgirl

During a mini trip to Houston to move my last few belongings back to New Orleans, a friend had recommended Common Bond for “the best croissants”. I did a little research and found that the chefs and staff at Common Bond all have extensive training from the top restaurants and culinary schools from around the country as well as experience in Europe. Looks like a pretty accomplished staff and it’s very evident…

Homemade Sausage, Egg, and Pork Sandwich.

From top to bottom there was something so refined about every menu item. It was pretty busy, but service was still great! I loved the soft scramble. It was very delicate so I would recommend adding a sandwich to make the meal a little heartier. I really liked the almond croissant (not pictured). It was light flavored with amaretto and wasn’t too sweet. Unfortunately, I’m leaving Houston so I won’t be able to frequent Common Bond as often as I’d like, but I’ll definitely be back.
